After 11 years of filming a group of 12 incredibly courageous and broken Khmer Orphans in Cambodia, the answers were quite stunning. We really are the heroes of our own journey, Self reflection, based on core value based questions, when asked repeatedly, (in our case, annually), =elicited grounding breakthroughs for their pivotal moments of life challenges.

Each of us is born into this world feeling inherently worthy, loved, and cherished. Our toddler-selves knew who they were, what they wanted, and who they wanted to play with. Then, something happened. Some of us began to receive shameful messages from the world that pulled us out of our frames of original worthiness, often leading us toward the need for external approval and reassurance, as well as the need to self-medicate with substances, food, shopping, or people-pleasing to get our own good feels. As we searched outside of our frames for our inner needs to be met, the authentic self we knew so well as toddlers had gradually taken a back seat.

This talk will address shame as a virus, how it differs from guilt, as well as the detriments to the authentic self when shame is internalized. We will wind up with a lead-in for the workshop that follows, which will focus on the importance of doing our own framework, as well as the 3 steps toward expelling your shame-virus and returning your authentic self to power

Through pregnancy at 15, losing one of my premature twin babies at 18, and going through a cancer battle with the surviving twin during covid, I’ve learned some important lessons on the resilience of the human spirit.
